Sweet and Spicy Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries

Oven-Baked Sweet Potato fries layered in a serving bowl

These Sweet and Spicy Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries have a smoky flavor thanks to smoked paprika, red pepper flakes for a spicy kick, and a punch of garlic. Plus, no soggy and limp fries here; they come out perfectly crisp and ready for devouring.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound (455g) sweet potatoes, washed, scrubbed, and dried
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes, more or less depending on taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Position the rack in the middle of your oven and preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a sheet pan in the oven to heat. Preheating the sheet pan in the oven helps make these sweet potato fries crispy.
  2. Cut the sweet potatoes into sticks 1/4 to 1/3 inch thick and place them in a large bowl. Add the oil to the bowl and toss the sweet potatoes until evenly coated. In a small bowl, mix the spices and salt until combined. Add the spice mixture to the large bowl with the sweet potatoes. Stir the sweet potatoes to coat well with the spice mixture.
  3. Once the sheet pan is hot (a drop of water should bounce on the pan when the pan is hot enough), spread the sweet potatoes out evenly, in a single layer. Roast until brown and crisp on the bottom, about 15 minutes. Flip the fries over, and continue to roast until tender and browned and crisp all over, about another 15 minutes.
  4. Transfer the fries to a serving bowl and eat immediately.

Notes

DOUBLING? Use 1 pound of sweet potatoes per baking sheet. Place one rack in the upper third of your oven and another rack in the middle. Rotate the trays halfway through baking time.
